Dental fillings are among the most common restorative dental treatments performed.  According to the Journal of American Dental Association, approximately 175 million dental filling procedures are completed each year.

Fillings are popular because they are affordable, versatile, and highly effective at fixing tooth structure after minor damage such as a chip or decay.  Historically, filling material was made of self-hardening mixture of silver, tin, and copper for strength, and liquid mercury for pliability and were commonly called “silver” fillings. With advancements in dental materials, our dentists in Tarzana now use composite white fillings.  White fillings blend in with the color of your teeth resulting in an aesthetic natural smile.

What is Composite White Filling?

Composite white fillings are a blend of powdered glass and plastic resin. They are used for fillings but can also be used for veneers or bonding, which is when we add composite to the sides or front of teeth to change their shape or close gaps. They are popular since they match the color, texture and translucency of your natural teeth.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Composite Resin Fillings

Advantages

  • Composite white fillings are made of hard, durable material
  • Material color matches natural tooth giving an aesthetic natural smile
  • Time – Single dental office visit
  • Preservation of maximum tooth structure
  • Does not break easily when placed on strong biting surfaces
  • Minimal risk of leakage if bonded only to enamel
  • Does not corrode like silver fillings
  • Free of possible toxic substances such as mercury

Disadvantages

  • Possible post-operative tooth sensitivity depending on the case
  • Technique sensitive for the dentist; any small complication can cause defective margins or voids leading to decay underneath over time
  • Needs a completely dry environment free of saliva and blood for the best bond to tooth which can be difficult inside the mouth
  • Not the strongest dental material, so it can break if it covers multiple surfaces of a tooth
  • Can shrink causing internal voids and eventually bacteria leaking underneath causing decay
  • Costs more than silver amalgam fillings
  • Can be left with a gap between adjacent tooth if not performed properly

Steps involved in Composite White Filling Treatment

One of the benefits of a white resin based filling is that it only takes one dental visit and is fairly quick.   The filling material is chemically bonded to your teeth.

Diagnosis, Preparation and Application

Your dentist will diagnose the tooth decay through a regular checkup exam and X-rays.  The cavity is typically detected through x-rays and clinical evaluation of the teeth. If the cavity is in between the teeth, sometimes x-rays are the only way to detect them.

The dentist will numb the area in case the decay is deep by administrating local anesthesia.  Then the tooth surface is cleaned, and all decay is removed.   Acid gel is applied to the area to open pores in the enamel, then a layer of bonding agent is applied, which acts as the glue.

Then, composite filling material is placed in layers and cured using special light that hardens it.  This process is continued until the desired shape and thickness of the filling is achieved.

Aftercare and Maintenance

Following your dental filling appointment, our dentist might recommend a follow-up visit in 2 weeks to ensure your bite is comfortable.  During the first few days after the filling, you might experience slight sensitivity.  It is important to practice proper oral hygiene and maintain regular dental checkups and cleaning.  This will avoid dental plaque buildup which will ensure longevity in your filling.

Cost and Dental Insurance Coverage for Composite White Fillings

Fillings are typically covered as a basic necessity for dental health.  Some dental insurance carriers cover only silver fillings instead of white fillings.

The price for composite fillings varies greatly depending on the size, location and type of material used.
